POM (Acetal) Material Properties and Applications

Polyformaldehyde, or polyoxymethylene, also known as POM or acetal, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction and excellent dimensional stability. Acetal is a nonhygroscopic, opaque, semicrystalline material used in injection molding and extrusion. One of the stiffest thermoplastics available before fillers are added, it is also known as the most metal-like plastic and for its great lubricity. Acetal is often selected when a low coefficient of friction is required, offering excellent wear and long-term fatigue in addition to easy machinability. Within limits, acetal parts will go back to their original shape after stress is released, making this material ideal for parts with spring-like features.
